Obituary for Marvin Lee Swaim

Marvin Lee Swaim, 102, of Hollis, OK, a retired farmer, died Saturday morning, Oct. 16, at Colonial Nursing Home in Hollis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Harmon County Funeral Home in Hollis. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery at Hollis.

Marvin Lee Swaim was born March 27, 1919 in Clovis, NM, to John Polk (J.P.) and Ada Sarah Swaim. He attended school in Gould where he was an outstanding boxer and wrestler, winning the regional wrestling title and qualifying for the state wrestling match in 1940. He also had a Gould School bus route for several years.

He was united in marriage to Doris May Johnson on Oct. 27, 1940 in Hollis. The Swaims had three children, Philip Lee, John Dale and Judy Kay.

Swaim began farming in 1941 with one dairy cow and borrowed $150 from First State Bank of Gould (Cattlemens Bank) to purchase three more milk cows. The Bank has served as his financial institution for over 86 years. To supplement the farm income through the years, Swaim was employed at the cheese plant in Hollis and worked 14 years for local gins in the fall, including one year at the Hollis Gin, seven years at the Davis Gin, three years at the Adams Gin and the final three years at Farmers Gin. Later, he hauled cotton for the Motley Gin during two cotton seasons.

Swaim retired from farming in 1985. His hobbies included playing dominoes, working Find-a-Word puzzles, traveling, fishing, and watching cotton and wheat flourish in their season.

After 63 1/2 years of marriage, Doris Swaim died on May 9, 2004, following a two- month battle with cancer.

In December of 2005, Swaim was united in marriage to Cloerene McKelvey in Altus, OK. She died Oct. 31, 2020.

Swaim was a member of the Hollis Church of Christ serving faithfully until the pandemic in 2020.

Survivors include: one son and his wife, Dale and Lisa Swaim of Whitesboro, TX; one daughter and her husband, Judy and Jerry Webb of Hollis; seven grandchildren, David Swaim of Hollis, Chad Webb of Perry, Danette Fontaine of Dodson, TX, , Brian Swaim of Bullhead City, AZ, Shelley Brzezinski of Perry, Jason Webb of Stillwater and Jeremy Swaim of Collinsville, TX; eight great grandchildren, Chase Webb and Cheyenne Webb, both of Oklahoma City, Erik Webb of Stillwater, Jake Webb and Jasper Webb of Glencoe; Bryanna Sipos and Savannah Sipos of Kent, WA and Kendra Sipos of El Cajon, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Swaim in May of 2004; one son, Philip Swaim in September of 2006; two sisters, Lucille McDonald in January of 2008 and Cathryn Covey in June of 2021; five brothers, Harry Kenneth Swaim in September of 1943, Flossy Swaim in February of 1929, John Swaim in February of 1990, Hulen Swaim in October of 2010 and Ervin Swaim in September of 2014; two sisters-in-law, Allene Swaim in March of 2009 and Shirley Swaim in July of 2018 and two brothers-in-law, G. W. McDonald in September of 1976 and Rubin A. (Peck) Covey in May of 2014.

Memorials may be made to the Hollis Church of Christ or Westview Boys' Home in Hollis.




Viewing will be from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday, October 18, 2021 and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2021 Tuesday at Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.

Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Harmon County Funeral Home Chapel, Hollis, Oklahoma with interment to follow at Fairmount Cemetery, Hollis, Oklahoma.

Services are under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.
