Katherine Sappington passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Mangum Community Hospital.

Mary Katherine Powell was born in Mangum on March 30, 1926 in the Border-McGregor Hospital, currently home to the Old Greer County Museum. Her parents were Hudson Marion and Bonnie Amelia (Boone) Powell. Katherine was reared in Greer County and graduated from Brinkman High School as Valedictorian of her class. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University for one year and then attended Oklahoma A&M (now OSU), until she became engaged in the fall of her junior year.

Katherine married Richard Louis Sappington on October 14, 1945, in the Mangum First Baptist Church parsonage. She and Richard farmed in the Brinkman area and attended Brinkman Baptist Church until it disbanded in 1957, at which time they joined First Baptist Church in Mangum. Katherine and Richard both served on numerous church committees as well as teaching Sunday School. But more important to Katherine than any church membership was her reliance on Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Both her words and her deeds spoke volumes about her close relationship with the Lord.

Katherine was a devoted wife and mother who continually put others" needs above her own. Her life centered around serving the Lord and serving her family. For example, when the family was deciding on where to build a new home in 1962, it was decided that, economically, Richard would make fewer trips from Mangum to the farm each week than both he and Katherine would have to make from the farm into town, due to their strong involvement in all of the family"s church, school, and sporting events.

Katherine was well known for her gardening and cooking skills. She combined her love of cooking and her support of the Old Greer County Museum by editing the museum"s "Country Cookbook." Katherine also served on the Oklahoma State Mental Health Board in the 1980"s and as President of the Greer County Genealogy Society in the 1990"s. Also during that time, she served on the committee that wrote and published a history of the Brinkman community.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hudson Powell, by her brother, Hudson Powell, Jr., and by her husband Richard L. Sappington. Survivors include her son Steve Sappington and his wife Anna, of Waco, and her daughter Ann Sappington of Dallas. Katherine is also survived by her brother John Mark Powell and his wife Maxine, of Tallahassee, Florida, and by 3 grandchildren, Steve and Anna"s children Wil, Ruth, and Sara Sappington, also of Waco. Also surviving Katherine is her sister-in-law Marie Sappington. Katherine and Marie became to each other like the sister that neither one otherwise had.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Mangum on Sunday, May 24th at 2 p.m. Online tributes may be made at In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, or online at or
