Obituary for Mary Lark Abernathy
Mary Lark Abernathy was born on April 23, 1925 in Altus, Oklahoma to Guy and Ella Hudson. She passed away Monday, June 4, 2012 in her home with her family by her side. She graduated from Ozark High School in Jackson County. She married Charles Abernathy in August of 1943. Just ten days after they were wed, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army and Mary found herself an Army Wife. They moved to Oregon where he trained and she stayed until his deployment. She remained in Oregon and worked to earn money so she could ride a train home to Altus. She waited two years for Charles to return and their only communication was through letters.
After the war, Charles returned home to his wife and they made their home east of Altus and began farming. Mary served as a busy farm wife and mother to their children, Crystal and Clint.
Mary earned her teaching degree from SWOSU and taught school in Blair, Oklahoma for several years. She served as the 4-H leader while teaching. She was a member of the Literary Club in Altus. She was an active member of the Gideon"s for years where she ministered to women and handed out Bibles in the local jail. Mary and Charles looked forward to their Gideon banquets and fellowship with their friends. Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for years where she taught Sunday school class. She was a member of United Methodist Women Circle I. She served as the United Methodist Women President, Chairman of the Methodist Women cookbook and she helped with the annual Country Kitchen Christmas Bazaar.
Mary and Charles loved to travel and visited many places learning about and sharing God"s word. They also enjoyed attending meetings around the country related to Charles" work in the cotton industry. Mary loved to cook and hosted many family reunions in their home.
She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took great delight in visiting with them. She enjoyed watching old movies on television and was a fan of the NBA and NFL.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Charles Abernathy; parents, brothers, Hilton and Earl Hudson, and her daughter Crystal Abernathy Simpson.
Mary is survived by her son, Clint and wife, Kim; two grandsons Justin and wife, Amy; Jarod and wife Jill and one granddaughter, Jordan Coppock and husband, Evan; four great-grandchildren; Kason Charles, Kenzie Cae, Cade Jarod and Drake John; and one brother Guy Hudson and wife Sandra of Altus.
The family would like to give a special thanks to her caregivers; Amy, Brittiney and Amber.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 10:00 am officiated by Rev. David Player. Burial will follow in Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideon"s International and ACA.
