Obituary for Mary Lou Bishop
Mary Lou Brown Campbell Bishop was born in Altus, OK on November 2, 1924 to Hazel Pitcher Brown and Claude Brown of Duke, OK. Her mother died that same day and she was taken home with her mother’s sister Nettie Pitcher Campbell, husband, Walter Campbell and their son, Milton. They raised her like their own while living in Carnegie, OK. She always considered Walter and Nettie her parents and Milton her brother.
She married Chester Bishop on July 10, 1941 at the Methodist Parsonage in Hobart, OK. She was 16 years old and he was 18 years old. They moved to Cordell, OK where she finished high school.
Chester then joined the Navy and they spent the next months in San Diego and San Francisco, CA before he shipped out. Mary sang in the USO club. They often reminisced about those special times in their lives. San Francisco was their favorite city.
After their son Gareth was born in 1946, Chester left the Navy and took a staff position in the Oklahoma Army National Guard and Mary went to work in the Civil Service at Tinker Air Force Base. She then went on to be a bank teller in Midwest City, OK. They were transferred to Chickasha, OK in 1960 and then back to Midwest City in 1966. She retired in 1979.
They moved to Duke, OK in 1944 where they were faithful members of the Duke United Methodist Church. Mary was a member of the Town and Country Club of Duke.
Mary Lou loved animals of all kinds but especially dogs. She loved any size or kind of dogs but she especially her beloved Doberman, Rocky and her teeny, tiny little Freddy.
She also loved fashion whether it was clothes, shoes, hats, jewelry or makeup. She never left home without her hair and makeup done just right and her pretty clothes on. She said her favorite hobbies were shopping, more shopping and parties. She LOVED Christmas. Mary Lou had a beautiful voice and she loved to sing and play the piano. She loved to travel (as long as there was no camping involved). She was not a big fan of the “great outdoors.”
Mary Lou is survived by her son, Gareth and wife Marcia of Duke; grandson, Chris and wife Amy of Boise, ID; grandson Erick and wife Heather of Colorado Springs, CO; great grandsons, Daniel of Fort Collins, CO., Ben of Memphis, TN., Noah of Boise, ID. And Brett of College Station, TX.
She is preceded in death by her husband Chester of 78 years in May; their stillborn Son, Aaron Lyle in 1951; parents, Hazel and Claude Brown, Nettie and Walter Campbell; Brother, Milton Campbell; Sister Geraldine and her oldest grandson, Michael Shawn Bishop.
Funeral Services will be at Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2 p.m.at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel, Altus, OK.
