Obituary for Mettie Alpha Hunter
Mettie Alpha Hunter, 91, a lifetime resident of Jackson County, died May 12, 2001. Services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 pm at the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ in Altus, Oklahoma will Bill Osborne officiating. Interment will follow at the Hess Cemetery.
Mettie was born on June 5, 1909, in Palmer, Oklahoma to Clem and Mary Dicy Edwards. Following high school, she attended business school in Missouri. When she returned to Altus, she worked for the Altus Times Democrat as a reporter and in print production.
Mettie married Walter Glenn Hunter on April 16, 1933 in Altus, Oklahoma. Her primary focus became raising their 3 children; Nancy, Kelsey, and Dicy.
In 1955 she returned to the clerical work force in Base Supply at Altus Air Force Base. She continued there until her retirement in 1974. Mettie has been an active member of the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ since the spring of 1949.
Mettie is survived by a son, Dr. Walter Kelsey Hunter of Ephrata, Washington; a daughter, Mary Dicy Winkler of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Glenn Hunter; her daughter, Nancy Henderson; and one grandson, Barry Winkler.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Hospice Program of Jackson County Memorial Hospital in her memory. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home
