He grew up in the Dothan, Alabama area and served four years in the United States Navy on the USS Everglades. He was united in marriage to Elli Koenn on February 9, 1963. Royce transferred to Altus in 1970 through his employment with the Department of Defense as a Civil Service employee. His civil service career spanned 25 years during which he received many Outstanding Performance awards and Civilian of the Quarter awards. He retired in May of 1994 as supervisor in Base Supply. His retirement gave him the opportunity to return to Alabama to care for his elderly parents. Upon their passing, he returned to Altus to be near his children and friends, Royce was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Altus, where he was an elder and member of the church choir. As a volunteer for Southwest Community Action's retired & Senior Volunteer Program, he gave many hours to the community. He used his love of music and ability to play the piano to bring pleasure to residents of the local nursing homes. Royce attended the Altus Meal Site and was a member of the Diabetes group. His hobbies included attending Gospel singing Conventions where he served as a past officer and included traveling to regional and national singing conventions. Royce remained active in reunions for Slocomb High School and the USS Everglades. He enjoyed traveling and visited his grandchildren, Kayle, Bailee, and Bryce in Illinois. Often Royce could be found waking for fitness at the reservoir or around town with his grandson, Brayden. Royce was a gentle, caring man who loved life and found great joy in helping others.
