Obituary for Mrs. Frances Mock
Altus native, Frances McMahan Mock, age 78, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Frances McMahan Mock was born in Altus, Oklahoma, January 28, 1931, to Hatton and Adella (Minor) McMahan. She is a third generation native of Altus, descendant of pioneers, J.R. McMahan and Fredrick W. Minor. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, excelling at all of those, and she was a dear friend to many.
Frances attended Altus public schools, Washington Elementary, Central Jr. High, and Altus High School, graduating in 1949 as an outstanding basketball player, swimmer, and salutatorian of her class. She was also the drum major of the band, football queen, and class secretary. She attended Stephens College in Missouri for a year before transferring to Oklahoma A & M, now OSU. She obtained her degree in Home Economics. At OSU, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, a beauty queen for the Redskin annual, and the 1952 sweetheart of Sigma Chi.
Frances married her high school sweetheart, John Mock, on January 27, 1952, at the First Baptist Church in Altus. After finishing college, John was called into the Army and they were stationed in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Later, Frances followed John to Germany. After the tour was completed, they returned to Altus where John joined his dad, Ralph, and brother, Paul, in the family farming and cattle business.
Frances was a loyal Bulldog and OSU Cowboy fan. She enjoyed going to football and basketball games, traveling with friends, playing bridge, attending Broadway plays in Oklahoma City, and meeting her friends for coffee on Thursday mornings. She is famous for her chocolate cake and date pinwheel cookies. She was active in P.E.O. and the First United Methodist Church in Altus and was a past member of Beta Mother"s Club and Aldonian. Her greatest joy was her children and grandchildren.
Frances McMahan Mock was preceded in death by her parents, Hatton and Adella McMahan, and sisters-in-law, Mary McMahan and Mary Nell Mock. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John, of the home; her daughter, Ann Mock Reeder and husband Carl, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her son, Barry Mock and wife Teresa, of Altus; grandchildren, Lance and Alexa Mock; her brother, Hatton McMahan and his children, Philip, Diann, and Dan McMahan; her brother-in-law, Paul Mock, and his children, Harrison Mock and Melissa Brewster; her sister-in-law, Virginia Snell, and her children, Linda Anthony, Mark Snell, and Betsy Koontz; her aunt, Elizabeth McAskill; and many other relatives and friends.

Family will greet friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 11, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Altus with Reverend David Player officiating. Private interment for family will be at the Altus City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
