SHURLEY
Nancy Jeanne Burroughs Shurley, age 70, walked on from this life on May 15, 2017, in Denver, CO. Nancy lived gracefully and vibrantly with breast cancer for over 20 years.
Nancy is survived by her husband Tom Shurley of Denver; her daughters Jennifer Shurley and Ashley Shurley of Denver, her siblings Janie Burroughs, David Burroughs, Jill Smith Hough, and Deron Burroughs. She is preceded in death by her parents Reo & Bess Burroughs of Oklahoma City and Tom & Betty Anderson Smith of Stillwater, OK.
Nancy was born on November 14, 1946, in Oklahoma City. She graduated as valedictorian from Classen High School in 1965, completed a dual bachelor"s degree from Trinity University in Math and Education in 1969 and a Master of Arts in Educational Guidance & Counseling from University of Central Oklahoma. She and Tom were married August 30, 1969, at St Paul"s Cathedral in Oklahoma City. She then taught math at Nimitz Jr High School in San Antonio, TX, as Tom completed his degree. While Tom served in the US Army from 1974 to 1977, they lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she taught in the Honolulu Public Schools, and in Northern California where their oldest daughter was born. She then returned to Oklahoma City, where she taught math at Taft Middle School and then gave birth to their second daughter. The couple settled in Altus, Oklahoma, where Tom practiced orthopedic surgery for 32 years, and Nancy became very involved in the community where she raised her daughters, volunteered for several organizations, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Nancy helped develop and run a free summer tennis program for many years. Later she served Altus High School as an AP math teacher, tennis coach, and National Honor Society Sponsor.
Nancy treasured her family and many friends. As a teacher, she was deeply committed to her students. She enjoyed travel, sports, her labrador retrievers, and nature"s beauty. Her friends and family will always remember her as a dedicated mother, wife and coach who loved teaching and learning, rooting for her sports teams, and spending time with her family.
A memorial service is scheduled for June 10 at 2:00 pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, OK. Johnny Morrow will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nancy"s life.
Condolences may be sent to 930 Acoma, Denver, CO. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or your local botanic garden.
