Obituary for Oliver R. Person
Oliver R. Person III, known affectionately to his inner circle as JR, Dad, and Batbat, peacefully departed this life on May 1, 2026. He drew his final breath in the sanctuary of his home, enveloped in the boundless love of the family that meant everything to him.
Born on the first day of spring in 1977 in Rio Grande City, Texas, Oliver was the beloved son of Oliver O. Person Jr. and Erlinda Rodriguez. His youth was spent moving between New Mexico, Texas, and California, but it was in Clovis, New Mexico, where his roots finally took hold and the most meaningful chapters of his life began to unfold.
The cornerstone of Oliver's existence was his enduring, soul-deep devotion to his wife, Hayley Person. Their story began as a spark at his sister's birthday party a moment of instant recognition that blossomed into a lifetime of unwavering partnership. United in marriage on August 5, 1996, in Clovis, they walked through life side-by-side, sharing every joy, and every challenge. Together, they built a fortress of love centered on their family, creating a bond that remains both close-knit and unbreakable.
A man of profound duty and quiet pride, Oliver dedicated twenty years of his life to the service of his country in the U.S. Army (1999-2019). As a member of the storied 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he braved six tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. His leadership and character led him to become a key contributor to the inception and development of a Downed Aircraft Retrieval Team and become one of its first members. Eventually his service brought him to Altus, Oklahoma, where he served with distinction as Station Commander in 2016 onward.
Beyond the uniform, Oliver was a Polymath of curiosity and a true artisan of life. His hands were never idle; he found beauty and challenge in everything from the digital landscapes of computers and their languages to the melodic strings of his guitars. He was an artist of many mediums, a virtuoso of 3D printing and design, a skilled woodworker, and a masterful storyteller. Yet, of all the things he meticulously built and created, nothing was crafted with more care than his relationship with his wife, his children, and his grandchildren. He poured the very essence of his heart into them, remaining their steadfast anchor and source of strength even through the trials of his illness.
To those who knew him, Oliver was a hero who lacked a cape but never lacked a solution. He possessed the rare magic of the "fixer"; if a machine was broken, he mended it; if a spirit was weary, he provided the guidance to heal it. He was "the man, the myth, the legend," the vibrant heart of every room who commanded attention not with a shout, but with the warmth of his spirit and an inexhaustible supply of "dad jokes."
His legacy of love is carried
forward by his devoted wife, Hayley; his children, Oliver Martin Person IV (and wife Amanda) and Rosalinda Eileen Person Hall (and husband Robert); and his four cherished grandchildren Addison, Annaston, Arlie, and Andie who were his greatest treasures.
One of ten siblings, Oliver is also survived by Lisa Banister, Jayson Person, Priscilla Tafoya, Norma Brunt, Elida Garcia, Artuo Rodriguez, Moses Rodriguez, Christopher Rodriguez, and Raul Rodriguez, alongside a vast community of nieces, nephews, and extended kin.
Oliver Person III possessed a light so radiant that it could pierce even the deepest shadows of circumstance. His quick wit and infectious spirit were his parting gifts to us, a reminder that even in the face of life's hardest battles, there is always room for a smile. Though his physical absence leaves a cavernous silence in our homes and a space in our hearts that no other can ever fill, we find comfort in knowing his work is finally done. He has laid down his tools, hung up his uniform, and found his eternal peace.
His legacy does not end here; it lives on in the steady hands of his children, the bright eyes of his grandchildren, and the enduring strength of the woman who walked every step of the journey by his side. We do not say goodbye, but rather keep watch for the echoes of his laughter in the wind and the warmth of his love in every morning sun. The world is dimmer without his spark, but the stars are surely brighter with his arrival.
