Obituary for Peggy Collene Coursey
Long-time Altus resident Peggy Collene Coursey, age 78, passed away October 21, 2008 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Peggy was born August 31, 1930 in Frederick, Oklahoma. to Roy and Mary (Lewis) Coursey. She moved to Altus in 1940 where she attended Washington Elementary school she attended Oklahoma College for Women in
Chickasha for 1 year and then completed her nurses traiuning at Mercy in Oklahoma City, graduating in September 1953 as a Registered Nurse. She started work with the Altus Public Schools as their first school nurse in October 1953. That is where she met her husband Eddie Coursey and they were married on May 22, 1954. She retired from the Altus Public Schools with 25 years of service in 1988. After her retirement she continued to serve others by volunteering with the Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice from 1995 until the time she became ill in 2008. She was the Hospice Volunteer of the Year, twice, most recently in 2008. Peggy was a long-time active member of the Grace United Methodist church where she was on numerous church committees. UMW member, a Sunday School teacher, VBS Volunteer, and choir member. She also taught swimming lessons for the Red Cross for several years and was a Girl Scout Leader. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Eddie and four children, Angela Derrick and husband J.D. of Moore, Oklahoma; Mike Coursey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Carol Hughes and husband Kevin of Tuttle, Oklahoma and Debora Phillips and her husband Tommy of Altus. One sister, Jeanne Putman of Denton, Texas; one niece, Lisa Whipple; nine grandchildren, Casey Felty and wife Edna, Morgan Felty, Ryan Coursey, Emily Coursey, Travis Hughes, Jessica Hughes, Sally Abernathy, Mark Phillips and his fiancee Rexi and Michelle Phillips; one great-grandchild Ashton Abernathy and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Peggy Coursey will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 25,2008, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend George Lupton and Rev Erin Martinez officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims funeral home.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 until 7p.m., Friday October 24, 2008 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
