Texas, at the age of eighty. Born Phyllis Kay Sherman on July 28, 1944, in Altus, Oklahoma, to L.B. Sherman and Margaret Davis Sherman, she was a treasured daughter. Throughout her life, she was known by many different names Phyllis, Miss Kay but her favorite was always Mamaw. Raised in Hess, Oklahoma, Kay graduated from Southside High School in 1962. Kay's life was defined by her deep love and caring nature. After meeting Jerry Mac Stayton on a blind date, she fell passionately in love, and they were married at the First Baptist Church of Hess on January 8, 1966. Together, they made their home in Altus and raised two beloved daughters, Mary and Norma. In 1974, Kay joined the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, reflecting her commitment to community service and philanthropy. Her warmth and kindness shown brightly in her work at Will Rogers Elementary, where she became known for her radiant smile, charming personality, and exceptional cooking. Kay retired in 1999, following the death of her husband Jerry Mac Stayton in 1996. She later married Dale Thames on October 30, 2003, who passed away in 2008. Kay's caring spirit continued to touch lives as a door greeter at Walmart until 2019, when her friendly demeanor and genuine warmth made her a beloved figure in the community. She then served as a pink lady for Jackson County Memorial Hospital, embodying her unwavering dedication to others. A devoted member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for over 35 years. In Kay's free time, she enjoyed cooking, spending time with friends and family, play dominoes with her church friends, and sharing her renowned "wacky cake" recipe. She was not just a mother to her own children but also to their friends and neighborhood kids, always making them feel loved and valued. Kay had an extraordinary ability to connect with people, her life was characterized by an immense capacity for love and generosity. Kay's legacy is one of profound love and selflessness, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was preceded in death by her father, L.B. Sherman; mother, Margaret Davis Sherman; sister Bobbie Lou Varney; brother, Merle Lee Sherman. Left to carry on Kay's legacy are her daughters, Norma Jean Stayton, Mary Ingram, and husband, Jim; grandsons, Sean Ingram and wife Carrie, Josh Ingram and Tesha Holden, Cory Ingram and wife Felicia, Trey Ingram, and Dyani Poolaw; seven great-grandchildren, three great-greatÂgrandchildren. Also surviving Kay are special friends Gwen Meeks, Sarah Standard, and Janessa Benton; her sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, and numerous nieces, nephews, church family, sorority sisters of Xi Delta Theta, and her friends.
The Stayton family will recieve friends from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2024, at Lowell - Tims Funeral Home, Altus, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Lowell - Tims Funeral Home Chapel, with interment to follow at Altus City Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma.
