Obituary for Robert Blake Brewer
Colonel (Retired) Robert (Buddy) Brewer, age 72, died Friday, February 7th, 1992 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 16th, 1919 at Chilhowie, Virginia. He resided in West Virginia formost of his early life. He graduated from Elkhorn High School in West Virginia. He attended Emory and Henry College in Emory, VA. He entered the Army Air Corps in January 1942 and remained active duty in the USAF for 24 years. From 1943-1944, Col Brewer flew 50 combat missions in the B-17 in the European Theater. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citations and other decorations.
He married Lucille Cunningham, May 14, 1944 at Jonesville, VA. Col Brewer came to Altus in 1957 and retired November 1, 1965. He flew B-17's, B-29's, B-50's, B-36's and B-52's. He had held the position of Oklahoma State Manager for United Services Planning Association with HQ in Ft. Worth, TX. He was an Altus Businessman and rancher, retiring in 1981. He was an active civic leader in the Altus community.
Survivors include: his wife, Lucille Brewer of the home; three brothers, Blaine D. Brewer, Van L. Brewer and Veldon Brewer, all of Bristol, VA; two sisters, Audrey Duffield of Roanoke, VA and Phyllis Mays of Atlanta, GA; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Byron Blake Brewer; two sisters, Vera and Sybil Rouse.
