Obituary for Ruby J. Crawford
Ruby (Baker) Crawford, a long-time educator and resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away on May 3, 2026, in Altus, Oklahoma. at the age of eighty-four.

A time of visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, Oklahoma. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2026, at Reed Cemetery in Reed, Oklahoma, with Pastor Doug Altom officiating.

Ruby Joy Crawford was born July 25, 1941, in Reed, Oklahoma, to Orville and Josephine (Slaton) Barker. She was welcomed by her older sister, Katie Belle. Ruby graduated from Mangum High School and continued her education at Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1963. She later received her Master of Teaching degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1966.

Ruby began her teaching career as a home economics teacher in Canute, Oklahoma. She later taught in Checotah before moving to Altus in the mid-1970s. There, she became a beloved kindergarten teacher at Rivers Elementary School, where she faithfully served until her retirement. Ruby had a special gift for teaching young children and loved each of her students as if they were her own.
In retirement, Ruby continued her life of service by volunteering at Jackson County Memorial Hospital as a Pink Lady. She was always looking for ways to help others and remained deeply involved in her community.
Ruby had a love for sewing, cooking, crafting, gardening, traveling, and researching family genealogy. She was a woman of deep and abiding faith. Her devotion to the church started at Dean Missionary Baptist Church between Mangum and Reed and she had been a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Altus since moving there in the 1970s.

Left to honor her memory are her niece, Nancy (Cole) Lehr and family Jay, Kelsey, and Cole Lehr as well as her niece-in-love, Dena Daniel and family-Curtis Daniel, Shelby Raymond and family, and Haley Jackson and family.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her sister; her brother-in-law, Eugene "Bugs" Cole; her special friend, Karl McKofe; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Prayer Ministry at First Baptist Church in Altus or to Hearts for Hearing in Oklahoma City in Ruby's memory.
