Obituary for Ruth Elizabeth Barrett
Ruth Elizabeth Caves Barrett, of Altus, Oklahoma, went to be with her Lord in the night, Thursday, March, 4, 2011. She was born to Fred and Grace Caves on February 16, 1922. She attended the Blair schools for most of her education, where she graduated with honors. During both her Junior and Senior years, she was Drum Major of the Blair H.S. Marching Band. In this capacity, she led the band in many festivals and competitions, including marching at the University of Oklahoma. She studied piano for many years, and was a participant in the 12 Piano Festivals in Altus.
Ruth attended Altus Jr. College where she met Chauncey Barrett, the love of her life. They married September 6, 1941, and lived on the family farm in the Martha community. Ruth spent her life as a homemaker, supporting Chauncey in his farming business, and raising their two daughters. Shortly after establishing their home, they began the daily practice of reading the Bible and praying together, and both of them felt this was the secret for their long marriage. They were both very active in the Martha Baptist Church where Ruth served as pianist and later organist of the church. As organist, she provided the music for many weddings and funerals. She also taught a girls' Sunday school class. One of those years, she challenged her girls to read the Bible through in one year, and most of them accomplished that goal.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Dana Gant and husband, Joe of Plano, TX and daughter Betty Barrett of Los Angeles, CA; granddaughters, Melinda Burns and husband, Mike of Longview, TX and Lisa Hollin and husband, Jeff of Frisco, TX. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Katie Burns, Kristin Burns, Barrett Burns, Joshua Hollin, Hayden Hollin, Lauren Hollin, Luke Montgomery, and Jake Montgomery; one sister, Fern Barrett; nephews, David Barrett, John Barrett; niece, Rita Jackson; nephews, Doug and Carl Caves; and nieces Linda Archer.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Sue, who died at birth; granddaughter, Stephanie Montgomery; nephew Gary Barrett; niece, Becky Barrett; brother Morris Caves; sister, Frances Caves; and brother-in-law, Charles Barrett.
She will be most remembered for her sensitive heart, and her deep love for her family and friends.
