Sandra Ethel Smith, age 70, of Altus, passed away at English Village Manor Tuesday afternoon, March 11, 2014, in Altus.
Mrs. Smith was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 18, 1943, to George and Ethel (Harmon) Kohl. Growing up in Maryland and graduating there, she met Claude Smith and they were married on November 27, 1961.Living in the Lawton area for several years while Claude was assigned to Ft. Sill, they resided in Indiahoma from 1967 until 1984, when they moved to Altus. Sandra spent six years in Charleston, South Carolina until returning to Altus in 2003, where she lived until her death. A homemaker most of her life, Sandra enjoyed bird watching, cross stich, nature, watching basketball, gardening, and reading, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Sam Kohl, she is survived by Claude Smith, the father of her children; four children, Butch Smith and fianc" Lonnie Kirkland of Ft. Worth, Texas, Wesley Smith and wife Samantha of Altus, Jennifer Birmingham and husband Herbie of Altus and Amy Varnell and friend, Stacy Scalf of Olustee; three sisters, Dee Herrera and Husband Joe of Baltimore, Maryland, Monya Sterner and husband Lee of Salsbury Maryland and Sidney Perlewizt of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sixteen grandchildren, Jamie Rogers, Caitlin Smith, Taylor Smith, Carley Smith, Billy Kirkland, Savannah Wallace, Shelby Birmingham, Destiny Huggins, Jessica Huggins, Hunter Birmingham, Harmony Birmingham, Patience Smith, Christopher Varnell, Austin Jones, Lillian Kate-Divine Smith and Kolby Scalf; two great grandchildren, Hayden Smith and Abigail Wyatt along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Sandra Smith will be at 10 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2014, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. A private inurnment service will be held by the family at a later date.
