Obituary for Shirley Grace Briscoe
Shirley Grace (Kirkwood) Briscoe was born Oct. 29, 1932, to William and Edna Kirkwood at Curtis, Nebraska. She was the second child and the only girl, having one older brother, Billy Jr. and two younger brothers, Duane and Lee Kirkwood. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and Northern Colorado. Shirley graduated from Fleming High School, Fleming, Colorado in 1950. Shirley passed away October 19, 2012. She was a member of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority.

Shirley and Jack met at a skating rink while he was on harvest in Grant, Nebraska. They married a year later on July 22, 1951. Shirley went everywhere with Jack, working side by side, whether it was harvesting, farming or spreading fertilizer in west Texas or Oklahoma.

Shirley was a wonderful mother of four children, LuAnn, Rudy, Billy and Donna.

In the early 1960's, Jack and Shirley moved to Maud, Oklahoma where they bought a ranch and started raising cattle. One of Shirley's favorite things was watching a new born calf learning to walk... must have been the mother in her. After almost 40 years, in July of 2000 they moved back to the family home in the Hess community where they enjoyed semi-retirement. They enjoyed their retirement being close to their family.

Being a mother of four, she was always busy taking care of her family. Shirley was a wonderful cook, not only to her family but to many boys who went on harvest with them. Some of the boys went several years just because they enjoyed her cooking. Her boys loved Shirley's cooking and have a fond memory of her chocolate chip cookies. She baked large amounts for the freezer and since the freezer was in their room, they would help themselves to them.

Shirley was an amazing woman. Whether the day needed a driver for a combine or a truck, mom was more than capable for the task.

She was soft spoken, quick to smile and always there to love. She loved making baby quilts for the grandchildren or sewing with the Hess Quilting Club. She read Readers Digest when she had a spare moment. She also loved taking pictures with either a still or movie camera.

Jack was a lucky man to have such a special and loving woman by his side for 61 years. Shirley will be missed and remembered for the wonderful person she was.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Edna Kirkwood and one brother, Billy Jr. who was killed in service of his country on Okinawa in 1945.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Edward Briscoe of the home in Hess; four children, LuAnn and Joe Wilson of Jenks, Oklahoma, Rudy and Elena Briscoe of Altus, Oklahoma, Billy and Angela Briscoe of Olustee, Oklahoma and Donna Welin of Gore, Oklahoma; two brothers, Duane and Ramona Kirkwood of Sterling, Colorado. and Lee and Marilyn Kirkwood of North Augusta, South Carolina; 11 grandchildren, Bonnie and William Moss of Altus, Oklahoma, Mary Briscoe of Altus, Oklahoma, Sarah and David Matthews of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina., Teresa Briscoe of Altus, Oklahoma, Joshua Welin of Milan, Illinois, Daniel Wilson of Jenks, Oklahoma, William Cody Briscoe of Altus, Oklahoma, Zachary Bearden of Winona, Minnesota, David Wilson of Jenks, Oklahoma, Samuel Wilson of Jenks, Oklahoma and Brian Rudy Briscoe of Altus, Oklahoma.
