FIRTH

Shirley Howard Firth, age 78, of Altus, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 8, 2015, at his residence, in Altus.

Mr. Firth was born in Bessemer, Alabama on November 23, 1936, to Howard Dewey and Alice Viola (Hollis) Firth. Joining the United States Air Force, Howard proudly served his country for over twenty years, from January 1954 until his retirement on February 1, 1974. His assignments included Chanute AFB, Illinois; Yokota AFB Japan; Eglin AFB, Florida; Sculthorpe AFB, England; Lincoln, Nebraska; Dover AFB, Delaware and Altus AFB, Oklahoma, where he retired. One of Howard"s more memorable assignments was helping to fly the first C5 that was delivered to Altus Air Force Base in 1969. On August 10, 1974, he married the love of his life, Charlene (Bailey) Tucker and they spent the next forty wonderful years together before his death. After his retirement, Howard opened Firth and Higgs where he used his mechanical skills and sold appliances until 2013, when declining health forced him to retire. Howard was very talented as a mechanic and he could fix just about anything. Known for caring for his family at all times, he especially loved and cared for his grandchildren, whom he dearly loved.

Preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bill Fritz, George Fritz and Harry Fritz and one sister, Naomi Holsomback, he is survived by his wife, Charlene, of the home; four children, Jimmy Firth of Lakeland, Florida, Sandy Elliott and husband Ken of Lakeland, Florida, Charles Tucker and wife Carole of Kerrville, Texas and David Tucker and wife Stephanie of Altus; one brother Vernon Fritz and wife Jackie of Birmingham, Alabama; ten grandchildren, Autumn and Christopher Firth, Emily, Ryan and Brittany Elliot, Chase Tucker and wife Danae, Caleb, Colton, Abby and Avery Tucker; one great grandson, Wyatt Russell Tucker; a special extended family member, Mike Browne along with many other relatives and friends.
