Sonja Arlene Helfenbein was born August 13, 1943 in Altus Oklahoma to Parents, Grover Jessie Riddle and Lillie Mae Osburn Riddle. Once an angel on earth, has now become an eternal angel. When she was afraid, her faith comforted and helped her transition to her heavenly home. Her life was based on helping others and giving of herself. Sonja's passion was not only her family but art and poetry that showed her strength and her fears in her battle. Sonja shared and displayed her writings at Salem Hospital, she gave this gift to encourage, support and love those who still fight that battle. Sonja lost her battle with Cancer on July 18, 2017.
Sonja was preceded in death by her parents, Grover Jessie Riddle and Lillie Mae Riddle and brother Darion Mack Riddle. Sonja has now joined her Parents and Brother to continue her journey.
Sonja is survived by 3 sisters Darlene Bowser, Marcella Ross (George), of Oklahoma and Janice Riddle of San Antonio Texas. 3 sons Raymond Scott Fleming, Christopher Shawn Helfenbein (Tracy), Justin Dale Helfenbein (Dawn) and 6 grandchildren, Courtney, Devon, Shawna, Brianna, Elijah, Madison and Adam, 3 great grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and cousins and her canine companion of many years Molly Mae Meriweather. She loved her family with all her heart and they all loved her dearly.
Sonja dedicated her life to the health of others for more than 40 years as a Registered Nurse retiring in 1998 for health reasons. Even in her toughest battle she continued to dedicate her life to her family, her friends and survivors.
Graveside Services will be held at 9:30 am, Friday, July 28th at Altus City Cemetery in Altus, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers Sonja would like to encourage others to donate the American Cancer Society. Assisting the family in Altus is Lowell Tims Funeral Home of Altus, OK and Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service of Salem, OR.
