Obituary for Ted Elmer Yates
Ted Elmer Yates was born January 29, 1923 to Elmer Ira and Yada (Schrimser) Yates. He passed away on February 17, 2008 in Norman, Oklahoma.
Ted was a graduate of Southside High School near Hess, Oklahoma, where the Yates family farmed and raised cattle and hogs.
Ted attended the University of Oklahoma where he studied engineering. He served in the Merchant Marines for two years on liberty ships out of England during world War II. Ted met and married Nelda Mitchell on March 10, 1948. He left the family farm in 1960 and moved to Altus, Oklahoma, where he worked for ITT Kellogg in the construction of missile silos. In 1963, the family moved to Dallas, Texas, where Ted worked for Moore-Hardeman Salvage, a company specializing in train derailment and elevator explosion salvage. In 1966, he and his family moved back to Altus where he opened up a new John Deere dealership with his brother, Tom Yates. He retired from the dealership in 1983 and he and Nelda traveled extensively in their motorhome.
Ted is survived by two children, Ann Forsyth and husband Doug of Norman, Oklahoma and John Yates and wife Barbara of Bolivar, Missouri; five grandchiuldren, Ross, Rachel and Holly Forsyth of Norman; Todd Ottman of Oklahoma City and Megan Yates of Bolivar, Missouri; one brother, Tom Yates and his wife Ellen of Altus, two sisters-in-law, Tempy Yates of Ponca City and Doris Stillar of Spokane, washington along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nelda, infant twin sons and brother John.
Memorial services for Ted Yates will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 23, 2008, at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
