Obituary for Thomas Gilliam
Thomas Alvin Gilliam Thomas Gilliam, 59, of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Thursday, November 16, 2000 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services have been scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at the Lowell-Tims Chapel. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home. The family will be receiving guests Monday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the Lowell Tims Funeral Home. Mr. Gilliam was born April 22, 1941 in Eddington, South Carolina to Theopious and Cora Gilliam. He joined the United States Air Force in 1959. On May 12, 1962, he and Emma Joan Day were united in marriage at the First AME Zion Church in Brooklyn, New York. Thomas' military career brought them to Altus in 1969,where he retired from the Air Force as a Master Sargent November 3, 1983. For the past 16 years, Thomas has been a Correction Officer at the Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite, Oklahoma. He held a rank of Lieutenant and was a Shift Supervisor. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife Emma, October 26, 1987. He is survived by his parents, Theo and Cora Gilliam of Brooklyn, New York; four children, Dawn Gilliam of Burnsville, New York, Dwayne Gilliam of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dana Gilliam of Montgomery, Alabama, and Darrin Gilliam of Plano, Texas; and by three sisters, Viola Legette of South Carolina, Mary Gilliam and Pearl Gilliam, both of Brooklyn, New York.
