Velma Mae Hewett, age 88, former Altus resident passed away Thursday, March 15, 2007 at the Great Plains Regional Hospital in Elk City, Oklahoma.
She was born September 24, 1918 in Sallisaw, Oklahoma to Jess and Anna Belle (Dobson) Riggs.
In February of 1937 at Tipton, Oklahoma Velma and James T. McCarty Jr. were united in marriage. He preceded her in death November of 1954. She later married Cleo E. "Red" Hewett on April 8, 1955 in Altus Oklahoma. He preceded her in death February12, 1993. Velma had lived in the Altus community for many years before moving to Canute, Oklahoma to be close to her family.
Velma had worked at Randels Dress Shop, Altus Western Wear, and Stevens Jewelry as a sales clerk for many years. She was a member of W.O W., American Legion, and the Good Sam's Club. Velma and Red enjoyed Square Dancing with the Silver Buckle Square Dance Club. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Altus.
She is survived by two daughters; Glenda Mae Jordon and husband Leon of
Canute, Oklahoma, Kathryn E. Stillwell and husband Charles of Altus, Oklahoma; one sister Pat Dill and husband Bob; one brother Glenn Riggs and wife Dottie all of Ft. Worth, Texas. Velma is also survived by her six grandchildren; Thomas McMullen, Myron L. McMullem, Jr. Tonja
Sifton, Dan Tomlinson, Jr. Kathryn A. Cryer and Matthew E. Stillwell; eight great grandchildren and two great -great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two sisters and one brother.
Funeral Services for Velma Mae Hewett are scheduled for Monday, March 19, 2007 at 2:00 pm in the Lowell-
Tims funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Stillwell officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
The family will greet friends Sunday afternoon March 18, 20077 from 2:00 pm to 4z;00 pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
