Obituary for Velma Myatt
Services for Velma Myatt, 83, have been scheduled for 2:00pm Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Altus with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Velma was born July 18, 1915, in Chico, Texas to Samuel J. and Lillie M. (Hunter) Smith. She passed away Thursday, January 21, 1999, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus, Oklahoma.
After graduating from high school in Chico, Texas, she married her sweetheart, H.L. Myatt from Newcastle, Texas, where they made their home in the early years of their marriage. She was a real pioneer woman as she raised her young children on their farm on the Brazos River.
She was raised by Godly parents who instilled within her a devotion to God, family, and friends. She continued to embrace these traits throughout her life. She taught her children to always walk in God's pathway, and in addition, she taught five year old children in Sunday School for 23 years. Among family and friends, she was renowned for her cooking, baking, canning, quilting, her great sense of humor, and her kindness. She freely shared with all.
Mrs Myatt was a devoted of the Altus First Baptist Church and a member of the Elizabeth Sunday School Class, with whom she was very close.
She was a good helpmate to her husband of 51 years, and she always considered herself a "Cowgirl" from Texas, though she dearly loved Oklahoma.
We shall always miss our gentle, strong, and loving Mom and Nana, but we are happy that she is now walking pain-free with her Lord.
Mrs Myatt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, H.L. Myatt who passed away October 30, 1985; one son, Gary D. Myatt; two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Jimmy D. and Janice Myatt of Lawton, Oklahoma, Huwanta and Roy Blasius of Norman, Oklahoma, Ramsey D. and Rosita Myatt of Longmont, Colorado, and Roger R. and Alicia Myatt of Ft. Collins, Colorado; and by one brother, David Ray Smith of Augusta, Georgia.
Also surviving are twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of loving friends and relatives.
