Velma Rie Sloan passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus at the age of 95.

Velma was born October 18, 1904 in Merit, Texas ;to Mack O. and Ida (Story) Thorp. She moved with her family to Vernon, Texas when she was a very small child. She graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1921. Velma married Florence Sloan in December of 1950 and relocated to the Altus community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Altus and enjoyed church activities and quilting every week at the church. She was employed as a clerk in department stores and last worked at Russell Department Store in Altus. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club.

Velma is survived by one nephew; Keith Thorp of Alexandria, Virginia, two nieces; Norma
Barton of Lewisville, Texas, and Natalie Weber of Seattle, Washington, Great-nephews; Kyle
Barton of Galveston Texas, and Christopher Thorp of Oakton, Virginia, great-neices; Cherie Weber of Seattle, Washington , and Linda Weber of Little Rock, Arkansas, and step-grandson; Phillip Sloan of San Antonio, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Florence Sloan, in 1955.

'Services will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church With Rev Ken Pate officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
