Vernon B. Chaney departed this life peacefully on March 11, 2014 at 10:21 pm at his home of residence in Altus, Oklahoma after a long battle with cancer. He was 88 years old.
Vernon was born Dec. 29, 1925 in Kaufman, Texas, in Ellis County, to the late Malachi Chaney and Leola Gordon. During his life time, he resided both in Texas and Oklahoma.
Vernon joined the US Navy at an early age and fought in World War II. He was honorably discharged on February 22, 1946 as a Seaman 2nd Class, SV6. He continued his military service in the U.S. Army National Guard of Oklahoma for 9-1/2 years as an MSgt until his honorable discharge.
Vernon was the first black man to be employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the City of Altus Sanitation Department. He retired after 37 loyal years of service on Oct. 31, 1991
Vernon was an active member and deacon of Macedonia Baptist Church and served faithfully until his death. His favorite scripture was Psalm 23. Other than attending and working in the church, he was a skilled mechanic, a handyman around the house, lawn care service provider, pallet transporter as well as a gas station attendant and owner. All these things, he did with gusto until his health begin to fail.
Vernon was the Father of Carnella Chaney Snoddy (Herman), Alberta Chaney Roland, Vernell Chaney Ellis (Richard), Ida (Daisy) Chaney Walker (Willie), Ann Chaney Knight (Thomas), Leola (Shirley) Chaney Jackson (Barney), William and Nathel Green
Vernon was joined in holy matrimony to Dinah Chaney on May 4, 1978 and became the father of Bobby Dale West (Dorthery), Dennis Ray West (Angela), Lora West Hurd (Mike) and Vett West (George).
Vernon was the grandfather of 28 children, great grandfather of 35 children, great great grandfather of several children and godfather to Breggitta and Sonny Booker.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents Malachi Chaney and Leola Gordon and his sister, Arnell Hatton. He is survived by this wife Dinah Chaney of 36 years, 12 children, numerous grand, great, and great great grandchildren as well as a host of family and friends.
Vernon lived a long and blessed life, was loved and cherished by many. And he will be missed.
