Obituary for Viola B. Cleverdon
Viola B. Cleverdon died Tuesday, May 17, 1994. She was born March 29th, 1911 at Deer Creek, OK. Her parents were William and Elizabeth Billman. She grew up on their farmstead in Grant County, OK.
After graduation from high school, she went to Kansas City, MO, where she worked at a bookstore while pursuing a career as a professional musician and singer.
The depression brought an end to that and she moved back to the farm. She eventually became a secretary in the Administrative Office of Oklahoma State University, known at that time as Oklahoma A&M and achieved a BA Degree in Language Arts in addition to her secretarial duties. Singing continued to be very much a part of her life at this time to the delight of those around her.
She married a Stillwater boy, the late Bill Cleverdon, August 15, 1937 and continued to work for the college until the advent of World War II.
They lived in several small towns in Oklahoma while Bill pursued a career as a movie theater manager for the Video Amusement Company. In 1950 they bought their own movie theater in Eldorado, OK.
Mrs. Cleverdon has continued to live in Southwest Oklahoma since then residing in both Eldorado and Altus.
Viola has been a member of two churches, the Methodist in Eldorado and the Presbyterian in Altus. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, B.P.W. and an AnCourant Clubs in Eldorado. Again, she continued to sing, helping out at various functions where needed.
The latter part of the fifties found Viola going back to her secretarial duties at the Altus Air Force Base, working along-side her husband as she did when they were small movie theater operators in Southwest Oklahoma.
She retired from the Air Force Base in the mid-1970's. During her retirement, Viola served extensively at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, her church and other organizations in the community.
Viola is survived by two daughters, Martha Carroll and Sue Wolfson; a niece and a nephew, Betty Heins and Bryan Kugel; four grandchildren, Robert Carroll, Brenna Arnold, Scott Wolfson and Brett Wolfson; three great-grandchildren, Jamie, Sean and Brittany Arnold, and many loving relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday evening. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Grant Groves officiating. Burial will be in the Altus City Cemetery under the directions of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
