Overfield

Virginia Overfield left this life on October 29, 2009 after a short but brave battle with cancer, to go to her Heavenly home. She was born September2, 1929 in Doxey, Oklahoma. In early infancy she moved to Brownsville, Texas where she lived until she was four years old.

Tom and Georgia Zieman adopted her along with her brother Ralph at the age of four and they lived in Henderson, Kentucky where she attended high school and after graduation in 1947, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky., to attend Nazareth College and trained at Louisville General Hospital for a registered nurse in a class of 240 students, the largest the school had enrolled up to 1946.

After two years, the school changed their policies and permitted students to get married. Virginia was the second of her class to get married and married John Overfield on May 21, 1949 in Henderson, Kentucky. Shortly after her graduation in nursing, they moved to Denver, Colorado then to Ft. Worth, Texas where she worked at the Harris Hospital as a PRN nurse, working on various floors including obstrectrics and orthropedics and gaining a lot of knowledge working the various divisions of nursing. A position very difficult and challenging.

They were transferred to Altus Air Force Base Oklahoma, in November of 1953. During her life in Altus, she was employed as a school nurse, worked at Park Lane Nursing Home, Vernon region Hospital in Vernon, Texas and Jackson County Memorial Hospital, where she was the director and at Altus Air Force Base hospital as an OB nurse. She enjoyed her career in the nursing field, but going to Sunday school and church as well as revivals and Bible study made her day. She was a member of the First Baptist, Altus where she taught Sunday school and attended numerous Bible study programs offered by the church.

She is survived by, John, her husband of 60 years, a daughter, Shirley Yvonne Overfield, Brian Keith and wife Melody of Altus, Oklahoma, grandson Brian Preston and great granddaughter Zoe of Wichita Falls, Texas, brother Jim Zieman and wife Tina of Robards, Kentucky, sister Doris Peart of Brownsville,Texas sister, Jana Nunley and husband Jim of Henderson, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Pete Davis of Penscola, Florida, and sister Deloras Zieman, her brother, Ralph Zieman of Juno, Florida and both parents.

Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church on November 2, at 2:00 pm awith Dr. Jeff Moore and Boyd Whitehead officiating. Burial will be in the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. There will be no visitation.
