Obituary for Vonna Jean Gibson
Vonna Jean Gibson, 88, beloved mother, grandmother (affectionately known as "Gammy"), and great-grandmother, passed away on August 28, 2024, with her daughter and son by her side. Jean was born on May 22, 1936, in Carter, Oklahoma to Berry Frank and Lela Stone. She was the youngest of ten children. Jean grew up on the family farm and graduated from Highway School in Beckham County, Oklahoma in 1954. On July 2, 1954, she married the love of her life, James E. Gibson. They resided in Elk City, Oklahoma until 1963, when they moved to Altus, Oklahoma.
During the 1970s, Jean owned and operated Jean's Burger System, where she made many lifelong friends. In 1977, they moved to Moore, Oklahoma, where they continued to build a life full of love, family, and community. Jean worked for the Oklahoma Blood Institute in Oklahoma City from 1983 until her retirement in 2003.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Janet (Joe) Remis of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and her son and devoted caretaker, James D. Gibson of Moore, Oklahoma. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Judy (Steve) Ford of Allen, Texas, Jami (Jon) Bryan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jenifer Canterbury of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Nina (Josh) Adams of McAlester, Oklahoma, and Ryan Gibson of McAlester, Oklahoma. She is further survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, Joey and Jenna Ford, Jonathan and James Bryan, Vincent, Lela, Violet, and Lilian Canterbury, Gage Gabbart (Kati Knott), Blayne (Alexus) Gabbart, Kaiden Gabbart, Iylah Adams, and Rhett Gibson; and two great-great-grandchildren, Carter and Lilee Gabbart.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Gibson; her beloved daughter, Judy; her parents, Berry Frank and Lela Stone; her four brothers, Atlas Stone, Willie Stone, Trilbey Stone, and Donald Stone; and her five sisters, Ina Garner, Ona Stone, Elva Harless, Zella Irvin, and Rose Lee Music.
A combined memorial service for James and Jean Gibson will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at the Centennial Memorial Chapel at the Altus City Cemetery with Arlis Moon officiating. Inurnment will follow services under the care of the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory.
