Willie Morris King, age 90, of Altus, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, April 18, 2007, with his family at his side.
He was born on January 14, 1917, at Lone Wolf, Oklahoma. He was a resident of Lugert, Oklahoma before the creation of Lake Altus. Willie was the son of Enoch and Della (Gibbons) King, early inhabitants of southwest Oklahoma.
Mr. was the first selective service volunteer form Jackson County prior to WWll. He entered the service on November 23, 1940, and sailed for Europe in October of 1941, as a member of the 15th Field Artillery. He remained in the European Theater of Operations until the end of the war. He received five battle stars for his participation in actions during the invasion of Normandy Beach and at the battles of Heartbreak Crossroads, Ardenne, Brest and the Battle of the Bulge. A few years ago, the Altus Times honored Willie on Veterans Day for being the first selective service registrant and he was taken to the train depot on a fire truck amid a parade.
Willie was member and deacon of the Friendship Baptist Church, faithful choir member and a great lover of music. his greatest love was his family and he will always be remembered as that hero all of us need in life to keep the faith. He was a man who never had an unkind word to to or about anyone and we will all miss his example.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Andrew King, and a sister, Bertha Bleu. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Wilma King; two sons, Maurice and wife Kathy of Altus and and husband Richard of Altus, and Blenda Bram and husband Rich of Altus; one sister, Ora Rogers of Clovis , New Mexico; fourteen grandchildren, Melissa and David Hagen, Altus, Kara and Michael Falen, Edmond, Mollie King, Altus
Shannon and Debbie King, Plano, Texas, Toby and Kim King, Oklahoma City, Whitney King, Dallas, Texas Kim Brian, Altus, angie and Ted Lawson, Altus, Brent and Sarah Brian, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jennifer Marble, Oklahoma City and Chad and Leslie Marble, Newcastle, Oklahoma; sixteen great grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Willie King will be held at 2 pm. on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ted Savage, Willie's brother-in-law, officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Home of Altus.
The family will greet friends form 6:30 until 8 pm on Friday, April 20, 2007, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
