Obituary for Mary E. Willeford
Mary E. Willeford 5/6/35 – 7/31/22
Mary E. Willeford was born in Altus Oklahoma one of 9 children to Mick and Lizzie Elliott. Mary was preceded in death by both
her parents and all her siblings and their spouses plus her loving husband of 55 years, Eddie Willeford, as
well as, a number of nieces and nephews. Mary graduated from Altus High School in 1950 and was on
the one and only Girls State Basketball Championship Team. She was quite the athlete. A few years
after finishing junior college, Mary met the love of her life and was married in 1957. They have three
children, Edwina Willeford of Altus, Craig and wife Marina Willeford, of Vail, CO, and David Willeford of
Altus. Two granddaughters Elizabeth Hughes and Alexandra Willeford and two great-granddaughters
Elisandra and Diana Hughes all of Apex, NC. Plus many many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by
her sister-in-law Adelia Hughes of Olustee.
Mary has had many jobs, but she spent 25 plus years working her way up to Seamstress Supervisor at
Kellwood’s Plant until it was closed and she retired. Upon retirement, she began working as a cook for
Martha Schools until it closed. Mary had to stay busy, so she helped her sister Maxine in the moving
business for several years, as well as cleaning houses for many wonderful people. During all this time
she also farmed alongside her husband where they raised wheat.
Staying busy was a way of life for Mary. She worked tirelessly on many committees at the Prince of
Peace Catholic church to include several years serving on the Parrish Council and assisted with running the Thanksgiving
Dinner fundraiser. Mary’s faith was always forefront in her life. In addition to serving her church, Mary
spent over 30 years helping the Altus Alumni Association. Typing and mailing thousands of envelopes and
name tags for the alumni banquet along with managing dues and helping arrange the banquet meal are
just a few of the duties this entailed.
Until the last 6 months of Mary’s life, it wouldn’t be hard to catch her push mowing her yard, weed
eating around the edge of her field, tending her garden, or baking food for someone who needed a meal.
Mary leaves a huge hole in all of the hearts of those who knew her.
