Lawrence Henry Hilburn, age 93, of Plainview, Texas and formerly of Hollis, passed away Monday, October 9, 2017, at a Plainview, Texas care center.
Mr. Hilburn was born in Jefferson City, Missouri on February 15, 1924, to William Walter and Eda (Schatz) Hilburn. The first few years of his life were spent on a farm in Western Missouri, before moving to St. Louis at the age of ten and leaving when he joined the Army Air Corps during World War II. As a veteran of World War II, Mr. Hilburn served in the invasion of Normandy as a USAF mechanic. After completion of his BA Degree from Southwestern, Weatherford College, he received a prestigious Fulbright Award allowing him to study art in Paris for one year. His masters degree was from West Texas State College as well as numerous other institutions.
His career as an educator began as a jet engine instructor at Amarillo Air Force Base and continued with his tenure at Amarillo ISD at all grade levels including Palo Duro High School where he created the art program. He taught art in many communities throughout the Texas Panhandle bringing not only theory, but also appreciation of individual approach to students of all ages. This was continued in his retirement as he volunteered in schools in and around his home, Hollis, Oklahoma. His art was exhibited in galleries in Amarillo, his own gallery and others in Taos, New Mexico as well as multiple galleries nation-wide and throughout the world.
Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Merle (Holly) Hilburn and one sister, Estah DeNoyer, he is survived by two children, Dr. Larry Hilburn and wife, Dr. Lynita Cooksey of Jonesboro, Arkansas and Shirley Hilburn of Plainivew, Texas; two nieces, Shirley of Houston, Texas and Laverne of Florida and a special friend, Dorothy Broadaway of Panhandle, Texas.
